Public Safety First

New Orleans is a safe place to live, work and visit

A NOTE FROM THE NOPJF:

Since our inception in 1995, the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation has grown and evolved to fit the needs of the criminal justice system and the community. Because of our rapid growth and taking on many new areas of responsibility, we feel that it is important to inform the community of where we are and what we are doing through this website. We want to shine a light on the innovative projects and initiatives being implemented throughout the justice system, because so often all we here on the news is negative. We also want to share with you the collaborative projects we are sponsoring in the community on the prevention side- because we realize that the police alone will never solve our crime problem- it takes the whole community. Finally, we want to inform you of the key needs of the criminal justice system moving forward. Most of all, we want you to be involved and feel a part of our efforts, because without your support the remarkable achievements we have made over the last years would not have been possible. The NOPJF’s mission is to make New Orleans a safer place to work, live and visit. To achieve that mission, we all must “get behind the badge” and be a part of the fight against crime. Thank you for your past and continued support.

The New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation (NOPJF) is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the people and processes of the criminal justice system in New Orleans, Louisiana. Originally founded in 1995 as the New Orleans Police Foundation, the organization was established to enhance the operations and capacities of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD). In 2003, the Foundation expanded its role to include other elements of the New Orleans criminal justice system. To reflect this wider scope of service, the organization’s name was officially changed to the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation in March of 2006.

A significant role of NOPJF not foreseen at its inception was reconstruction of the New Orleans criminal justice system following Hurricane Katrina. The storm’s impact on the New Orleans criminal justice system was profound — both the physical and human infrastructure of the justice community were severely compromised. The NOPJF has been a key factor in restoring law enforcement capacities in New Orleans post-Katrina.

Since Katrina, three goals have defined the NOPJF strategic vision of restoring faith in the Orleans Parish Justice System:

  • Retain and restore essential human capital
  • Rebuild and restore critical infrastructure
  • Improve operational effectiveness and efficiency

In addition to NOPJF staff, volunteers who participate in NOPJF fundraising activities and those who serve on the NOPJF board make an invaluable and essential contribution to the Foundation. The Foundation’s Board of Directors includes a cross-section of New Orleans citizens involved in business, tourism, religious practice, and other endeavors within the community. NOPJF activities are funded through grants and private contributions, from organizations and individuals alike. For those interested in a more public role supporting NOPJF activities, sponsorship opportunities are available for NOPJF fundraisers and programs. Financial contributions to the NOPJF are fully tax-deductible, and the Foundation is registered with the charitable-giving information resource GuideStar.org

The New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation Mission

The mission of the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation is to foster a safer city by creating a cooperative public-private environment in which all criminal justice agencies can attain their maximum operational capability and productivity. The Foundation will impact safety and justice in New Orleans and facilitate improvements and reforms throughout the criminal justice system.
