College Tuition Assistance -
The Foundation Tuition Assistance Program has reimbursed over $200,000 to NOPD officers and staff personnel since its inception in 2000. It is comprised of two elements. The first element is reimbursement of university documented out-of-pocket costs according to the following criteria:
- Undergraduate - $50 per credit hour with a maximum of 6 hours per semester, while fulfilling the requirements of the program.
- Graduate - $100 per credit hour with a maximum of 6 hours per semester while fulfilling the requirements of the program.
The second element of the tuition plan is actual tuition waivers, college credit for the NOPD academy courses or reduction of tuition offered by local universities to law enforcement personnel. Here is are examples of the discounts offered:
- UNO – only pay $111 or $126 for a 3-credit hour course plus per credit hour technology fee up to a maximum of 6 hours per semester
- Tulane – gives a 50% discount on tuition
- Loyola University – gives 18 credit hours with P.O.S.T. certification from the Academy towards a degree in Criminal Justice.
- Delgado Community College – waives all tuition costs, offers Associate Degree.
Establishing this educational support program has allowed the city to change civil service promotion requirements. Officers are currently required to have an Associate Degree for promotion to Sergeant and to be a college graduate for promotion to Lieutenant or Captain. The program also assists with recruiting and continues to enhance the general knowledge base within the ranks of the NOPD. It is open to all employees of the NOPD.
